The blue train from Fangliao station in Pingtung county to Taitung and back has a special place in the heart of many. As the last remaining scheduled Pu Kuai Hao - or "ordinary train service" - in Taiwan, we thought it was important to document a journey on this train before the service was cancelled forever.
Once a very regular sight on the railways, this slow, old commuter train has been replaced by faster, more frequent electric trains throughout Taiwan. However, in the south east of Taiwan, the last part of the railway network to be electrified has seen the old workhorses continue up until very recently.
On the 22nd of December 2020, the last remaining service was discontinued, leading to the end of an era, and the end of an integral piece of Taiwanese culture.
